چکیده

INTRODUCTION There are numerous causes for intracranial calcification in children. We describe an unusual cause of intracranial calcification in a child, namely, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI). CASE REPORT A 12-year-old boy presented with seizures and developmental delay. MRI of the brain revealed intracranial calcification. Evaluation showed findings suggestive of NDI. The lack of evidence of any other metabolic defect suggests that these calcifications were secondary to NDI. He also had anemia for which he was investigated and diagnosed as thalassemia minor. Detailed literature review failed to reveal any reported association between NDI and thalassemia minor. CONCLUSION We report this case to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of NDI to prevent organic brain damage.

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and Werdnig-Hoffmann disease in a child: an unusual association.

The unusual association of Werdnig-Hoffmann disease and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in a 5-month-old child is described for the first time. The association is casual, considering the different pathways of genetical transmission in these two diseases. The possibility of identifying the heterozygote is discussed and it appears to be limited to nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

Hypernatremic dehydration, diabetes insipidus, and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis in a neonate: a case report

Background In breast-fed neonates, hypernatremia may occur from inadequate breast milk production, central or nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, gastroenteritis, or salt poisoning. Hypernatremic dehydration is a known risk factor for cerebral sinus thrombosis and death. We report a breastfed neonate with hypernatremic dehydration, diabetes insipidus, cerebral sinus thrombosis, and disseminated int...

Treatment of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus with hydrochlorothiazide and amiloride.

Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is characterised by the inability of the kidney to concentrate urine in response to arginine vasopressin. The consequences are severe polyuria and polydipsia, often associated with hypertonic dehydration. Intracerebral calcification, seizures, psychosomatic retardation, hydronephrosis, and hydroureters are its sequelae. In this study, four children with NDI ...

EVect of DDAVP on nocturnal enuresis in a patient with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

The case of an 8 year old boy with both nocturnal enuresis and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus is presented. Diagnosis of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus was based on a typical medical history, the characteristic result of a fluid restriction test, the lack of an eVect of 1-desamino-8D-arginine (DDAVP) on both urine osmolality and plasma coagulation factors and, finally, the detection of a hemizy...
